Will a MagSafe wallet stick securely to a non-Apple magnetic case and which brands actually hold?

Testing on an iPhone 14 with a third-party magnetic ring case!! Looking for something that won’t slide off in a pocket.

Hi Rebecca! I had the same worry on my iPhone 14 with a third party ring case. 😬 A cheap generic wallet and a folio style one both slid off in my front pocket when I sat down. The one that finally stuck was ESR. Its 3200 g magnetic strength resisted shear on the ring and stayed put during daily pocket use. Only minor gripe was the card slots felt tight for a day and then broke in. So yes it can hold on a non Apple magnetic case as long as the ring is decent and this one has been reliably pocket safe for me. ✅

Been there :)

Pull strength numbers do not tell you much for pocket use. What matters is shear resistance and friction. Non Apple cases vary a lot here because of magnet grade & whether there is a steel backing plate under the ring, and the total distance between magnets. Keep that distance low and the hold goes up dramatically.

Simple checks you can do. 🔎 If the wallet self centers with a strong snap and you can tug the phone straight up by the wallet without a hiccup, that is a good sign. 👍 Now try a sideways tap test. Hold the phone by the edges and flick the wallet side to side a few times. If it does not creep, it will usually survive a sit and stand cycle in a front pocket. If it drifts even a few millimeters, the ring is either too weak or too far away. Texture on the case back also matters. Smooth plastics reduce shear hold while silicone or leather style finishes add grip. Keep the card count low to limit thickness and weight and you will get a more secure attachment on a third party ring case.

Hey Rebecca! It can work but the ring in the case matters more than the wallet. Cases with the magnet ring built under the back with a steel plate behind it tend to grip far better than stick-on rings sitting on top of the plastic. Thickness between the magnets is the other big factor. If the case adds much more than a couple millimeters over the ring & shear strength drops fast.

Do a quick test at home. Attach the wallet, lift the phone by the wallet, then give a few firm sideways shakes. If it stays centered without creeping, you're probably fine in a front pocket. Clean both surfaces and make sure there is no dust or skin oil. A slightly textured back helps a lot, glossy TPU is slippery. Works great.

Use a case where the ring is under the back panel instead of a stick on so the magnet sits closer and a backing plate helps the wallet stay put and and carry fewer cards to avoid extra thickness and weight :) Pocket it with the wallet facing your leg and wipe both occasionally so sweat and lint do not make it slippery.
