Try blasting it out from both ends with a vacuum or compressed air - lint often packs around the heater and inside the motor even when the rear screen looks clean. Using the cool-shot intermittently or sticking to medium heat with high airflow can help it stay under the cutoff while you finish. If it still overheats the fan motor may be slowing from wear or the thermal limiter has weakened, and replacement is the safer move.
