Agree with you - +1 on the 35/1.8; if you want tighter portraits and creamier blur on a crop body a 50/1.8 is a cheap, light upgrade that usually beats the kit for sharpness which, yeah... make sure you get the AF-S/STM version for your mount, and shoot around f/2–2.2 with single-point AF on the nearer eye. Also, maximize separation by putting your subject a few steps from the background and yourself a bit farther back - this does more for that pro blur than any setting tweak.
I kept my launch model case when I moved to OLED and it has been totally fine. The OLED body is a touch wider so the foam hugged it a bit more, but no warping or stick pressure.
I do a quick close and squeeze test and make sure the mesh pocket is either empty or only flat items like a cleaning cloth. If nothing presses and the zipper pulls glide without scuffing the edges, you are good.
