I’d also keep the metadata portable: write people captions, event, and place into standard IPTC/XMP, set EXIF DateTimeOriginal to the photo’s subject date, and DateTimeDigitized to the scan date so most apps sort and filter correctly. For resilience, follow 3-2-1 backups (cloud plus two local copies with one offsite) and drop a simple README.txt next to the checksums explaining the naming scheme and where the masters and derivatives live.

One more thing to check: older Kindles will stall if the clock is wrong or the indexer is stuck. Set the date/time correctly then search for a nonsense word; if you see “items not yet indexed,” open that list, remove the stuck title, do a 40‑second hard restart, and try again. If it’s still stubborn, deregister and re‑register the Kindle to refresh licenses before using the USB transfer fallback.
