How can I troubleshoot my electric toothbrush not charging?

My electric toothbrush stopped charging overnight! I actually need to fix it fast! What could be wrong?

This happened to my Oral-B Pro 1000 the night before a flight and I panicked. I tried a different outlet and reset the GFCI, cleaned the base and the metal ring on the handle with alcohol to clear the toothpaste film, reseated it and left it on for a couple hours, and did a long press power reset, but nothing. The base had failed, so I replaced it with YANZHI charger for Oral B and it started charging right away. It worked because it matches the 3757 model my handle uses and it supports 110 to 240 V input. The cord is a bit short, but it has been solid since.

Try the simple things first. Move it to a different outlet and hit reset on any bathroom safety outlet. Make sure the handle sits squarely on the base on a non metal surface, then wipe the charging area and the top of the base with a bit of isopropyl alcohol to clear toothpaste residue and dry everything well. If the battery went fully flat, leave it parked for a few hours without touching it. Some handles wake up after a long press of the power button which acts like a reset. If none of that changes anything the base or the internal battery may have failed which means service or that model. Works often.

Tbh same problem hit me last week and I was scrambling before work. Tried switching outlets, nope. Cleaned the contacts with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, carefully though, don't want to damage anything. Let it sit for a bit.

Then I realized the cord might be loose, so I jiggled it around and reseated the plug. Boom, started charging. If that doesn't do it, could be a faulty that model unit. Frustrating, right? But yeah, those steps saved me.

I troubleshoot these the same way I would any small appliance... Verify the outlet with something else & reset the bathroom safety outlet if present, and check that the plug fits snugly. Clean off the ring and the spot it sits on because a thin layer of gunk can block the magnetic field. Keep the base off a metal tray or shelf and try rotating the handle a quarter turn as you set it down in case alignment is off. If there is still no sign of life and you have ruled out power and grime, the charging hardware or the battery is likely bad and you will need service. No sparks, no drama.

I've had this issue before and it drove me nuts. First thing I did was check if the outlet was working by plugging in something else and like a lamp, and that was fine so I moved on. Then I looked at the charging base and noticed some grime buildup, so I wiped it down with a soft cloth and a bit of water, making sure everything was dry before trying again.

After that, I tried resetting the toothbrush by holding the power button for about 10 sec, which sometimes clears glitches. If none of that works, it might be the battery giving out, especially if it's an older one. Happened to me after a couple years. Worth a shot though.

Hi Hiroshi!

Moisture can block charging. If water got into the handle or around the contact area and dry it thoroughly by standing the handle upright on a towel away from the base for a day, and if you have a drying packet place it nearby to help. Do not use a hair dryer up close since heat can damage seals. Next day, clean off any film and try again. Fixed mine.

I had the same late night scare before a work trip and it ended up being the outlet :) bathroom safety outlet had tripped so moving the setup to the kitchen told me right away what the problem was and then a quick reset and it charged.

Confirm the local voltage matches what your that model supports which, yeah, if you are traveling. sometimes the fix is boring and outside the brush. Done.

If it got wet and let it dry thoroughly, then check the outlet and scrape any gunk off the charging contacts. If nothing changes, the battery may be done and you'll likely need a repair or replacement.

Check the outlet, clean the contacts, and try a long power button reset to revive it. If it still won't charge, the battery or internals may be shot and it's time for repair or replacement.
